Mallee Tourist & Heritage Centre. There is plenty to see at the Mallee Tourist and Heritage Centre which has a variety of displays that provide an educational and historical picture of life in a rural community.

Volunteers

Volunteers make it possible for the Centre to be open for three hours Monday to Saturday.

The Letterpress Printing Museum

Set up as a typical regional printing office of the Letterpress era and has working printing presses, equipment and type.

The Gum Family Collection

Consists of restored stationary engines, tractors, farm and household memorabilia, backed by a panoramic Mallee mural.

The DA Wurfel Grain Collection

Over 1000 cereal varieties, including interpretive panels concerning developments in the grain industry. As a young boy Don Wurfel was interested in the wheat varieties his father grew on the farm. Throughout his life he conducted trials to test the varieties for yield and suitability to the area.

A Dryland Farming Display

With the theme ‘CONSERVE THE WATER – CONSERVE THE SOIL ’, has six landscape dioramas and interpretive panels portraying agricultural development and production in the district over the hundred years.

The Mallee Women Display

Focuses on the theme “they stood beside them’. It is an evocative display demonstrating the contribution made by women as they supported the men in the settlement of the Mallee.

The “Spirit of the Mallee”

Intpretation with a series of clay plaques on concrete “motor tyres.” The plaques bear information explaining the various aspects common to Mallee communities—Water, Fire, Mallee, Land Use, Settlement, History, etc.

Dolly’s Golden Rain Tree Crafts & Heritage houses the Lameroo Craft Shop, the Lameroo & District Historical Society Museum and the Visitor Information Centre.

Browse through the beautifully kept shop which is stocked with an ever changing range of locally made quality craft, country cooking, sewing, knitting, art, woodcraft and souvenir lines, then enjoy morning or afternoon tea and a leisurely stroll around the museum.

Dolly’s Golden Rain Tree Crafts & Heritage is managed by Craft Club Members and Lameroo & District Historical Society Volunteers.

Tourist Information Centre and Museum

From the shop visitors then go into the Tourist Information Centre and Museum which has been set out to reflect early settlement of the area. There is a replica of an early Community Hall, Lutheran Chapel, Post Office, Bank and Shops as well as displays showing the Blacksmith, Farming, Mechanical and other aspects of life in a small town.

Almost all the items on display in the museum have been donated and/or collected within the Lameroo area.

Devonshire Teas

Devonshire Teas are available at all times and a variety of catering options can be offered to suit visit times and visitor numbers. Seating is available indoors and outdoors in the Golden Raintree Garden and the building is easily accessed, wheelchair and pram friendly, all under one roof.

Building History

Erected in 1911 the building was designed as a shop and dwelling. It was first used as a green grocery and then a saddler and leatherworker. The next occupant, besides mending harness, sold push bikes and motorcycles. The building then became a private home until converted for its current use.

Craft Shop

Visitors centre through the Craft Shop has an excellent array of well priced and mostly locally made items for sale, including cakes, biscuits, jams and sauces, decorated tea towels, cushions, toiletries, cards, toys, jewellery, baby items and souvenirs just to name a few.

Monday – Friday 9.30am – 5pm
Saturday 9.30am – 12noon
Tours and small groups Welcome anytime.

Bookings are appreciated for coaches due to staffing arrangements. Weekend, public holidays and after hours tours will be arranged by appointment.
